The 19,000 square foot Stanford House
became the first Governor's Mansion in California. Leland Stanford was
the elected California Governor in 1862. While living here, Stanford's
15 year old son died of typhoid fever. When the ghost of his son, Leland
Jr. appeared to his father, he asked his father to build a university
of higher learning for young men.
Leland Stanford founded Stanford University
in 1891.
