DESCRIPTION:
The United States Air Force
Museum is the world's largest and oldest military aviation museum. It is free
to the public, though picture id is required to enter. You should also wear a
good pair of walking shoes. What a glorious collection of aircraft, war memorabilia,
historical accounts & displays one never hears in school, stored in 5 huge
Galleries all connected by hallways. Tom and I were in hog heaven! It is one of
the most complete exhibits we saw on this trip. Learned about events I didn't
know too much about; Just knew bits and pieces of what happened.
Early
Years Gallery: Early Military flight to the beginning of WW2. Lots of planes
from the '20's and '30's.
Air Power Gallery: Lots of WW 2 planes,
photos & exhibits of a variety of occurrences, including the story of the
Philippine Death March, life in a POW camp, The Flying Tigers story, uniforms
of all the services, heroes, and campaigns, and other artifacts too numerous to
mention.
Modern Fight Gallery: Covers Korean War and Southeast Asia
- Each era in its own hangar, divided by a hallway. Many planes and helicopters,
stories of events and occurrences, like the hard life experienced by our POW pilots
at the hands of the North Koreans, etc. are in the exhibits on display. Saw my
first B-52 bomber up close!
The Cold War Gallery: Another 2 hangar
setup with all the planes used by the Air Force in that era. "Exhibits reveal
how technological achievements of the era led to the advanced systems being applied
in modern combat. The gallery’s aircraft collection presents a broad range of
platforms, such as fighters, long-range bombers, attack aircraft, reconnaissance,
heavy airlift and trainers. Modern aircraft on display include the world’s only
permanent public display of a B-2 stealth bomber."
Also of interest,
as you walk into the area, there is a section of the Berlin Wall on display.
Missile
& Space Gallery: The highlight for me was to see the Challenger Space
Shuttle on display. Didn't realize HOW BIG it is. Some space modules used in one
of Apollo series was also here, along with various missiles etc.
MANIFESTATIONS:
As
freedom is not free, many brave men and women gave their lives in defending it,
paying the ultimate price, throughout the years. It should be no surprise that
some of the planes, exhibits and artifacts have attracted the entities of the
people who met their death serving in hazardous conditions, or being in the wrong
place at the wrong time.
The planes, artifacts and personal items of
the deceased have attracted their spirits, as reported by the museum's evening
staff.
